Tingtong Ketz is one of the better band names I’ve heard recently. The group is from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and put out its debut album Enjoy the Monsoon in the fall. It’s on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

I came across Tingtongketz while editing a piece about the band’s founder Shika Corona for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. It’s written by Faris Saad.

Shika, a transgender musician and artist, tells the story about growing up in Malaysia as the country was going through the early stages of Islamisation. Through funding from Japan and Finland she was able to develop her work, inspired by metal, before returning to Malaysia.

It’s a fascinating read.
